Is your air conditioner continually shutting off even before it reaches the temperature you’ve set on the thermostat? This common problem is called “short cycling.” This continual process of your air conditioner turning itself off and on frequently is not only irritating, it is inefficient and costly on your cooling bill.
MTB Mechanical’s expert technicians often see short cycling air conditioners and can diagnose the issue through a maintenance visit. There are three main issues that cause your air conditioner to shut off, including:
The compressor on your A/C unit is the engine of the refrigerant cycle. It generates the pressurized conditions through which the refrigerant absorbs and dissipates thermal energy, cooling your home. Often, the compressor is a sealed component preventing dust and debris from damaging its moving parts. If the compressor is overheating or is worn out, this will often result in the system shutting off frequently.
The refrigerant in your air conditioner needs to stay at a consistent level for the system to work properly. If your refrigerant level falls, you will experience poor cooling performance and energy efficiency. This can lead to short cycling.
Inside your air handler is an evaporator coil. This cools the warm air that is drawn from inside your home. If you have an airflow issue, such as a clogged air filter, frost can build up on your evaporator coils. This, again, can lead to a short cycling issue.
From circulating allergens throughout your home to causing expensive inefficiencies in your HVAC system, it’s important to change your air filters often. Have trouble remembering when it’s time? Sign up for MTB’s filter reminders and next time yours are ready for a change, you’ll receive a friendly email letting you know.
