“Home for the holidays” is looking a lot more normal this year, with many families planning to travel and spend time together. If your home will be the gathering place for extended family (and/or friends), the experts at MTB Mechanical would like to remind you of a few things to consider when it comes to your thermostat settings. This way, you can focus on good times and togetherness, and not your heating bill.
With visitors coming in and out all day, and colder weather settling in, what’s a reasonable temperature to maintain in your home during the day? The happy medium of 68 degrees should keep everyone content. But if 68 has you and your guests feeling a chill, pull on a sweater or an extra layer of clothing before you change the temperature. After all, if you turn the thermostat too high, you run the risk of overdoing it and overheating the rooms throughout your home, including the guest rooms. So if you adjust, do it gradually, raising the temperature one degree at a time until there are smiles all around.
While Cooking the Big Meal
It can get hot in the kitchen — whether it’s from too many cooks or the turkey in the oven. Knowing that the kitchen will be heating up, don’t be afraid to turn down the thermostat earlier in the day. The warmth from the all-day cooking will help keep you and your guests comfortable. Even so, if your home is more than one story, or has an open floor plan, you may want to wait a little closer to bedtime to turn down the temperature for the night.
Good Night, Sleep Tight
Before calling it a night, consider turning your temperature down as low as 65 degrees. Dress accordingly with warm pajamas, and provide your guests with thick comforters to keep them cozy throughout the night. If you have a programmable thermostat, it’s advisable to schedule a return to the happy medium of 68 degrees by the morning. And if you don’t have this programmable option, just remember to do it manually when your feet hit the floor, so that everyone wakes up comfortably.
Of course, if there are any issues with the performance of your heating system, MTB is just a phone call away. We’ve been building strong relationships with the families of the Charlotte region for more than 45 years, and we’re here to deliver The Science of Comfort. From everyone at MTB, we wish you the warmest of holiday seasons! And when the time is right for our expert technicians to help you keep your system running at tip-top shape, give us a call at 704-321-9250 or schedule an appointment online.
