Four must-ask questions for your A/C repair technician

You’ve made an appointment with your local HVAC company, and they’re sending out a technician to do maintenance or to solve a problem. Excellent! What now? The pros at MTB Mechanical have seen it all while helping folks just like you. Be prepared to ensure you’re better informed.

Here are four must-ask questions for your tech about your HVAC system and specific comfort needs:

What do I need to know about my existing HVAC system?

What you may really be asking here is, “how much time does this thing have left before I need to replace it?” Ask your tech if they believe that  future repairs will keep your system running smoothly for a few more years, or if you should begin considering replacement before your existing system bites the dust.

Another important question to ask is whether your older unit uses R-22, a refrigerant that is no longer being produced for sale in the U.S. Since the end of 2020, R-22 is only available from  recycled or recovered sources, which has increased the price. If your mature unit uses this type of refrigerant, we suggest you consider an upgrade soon.

How can I cut down on my energy costs?

Depending on your home’s condition and age, your HVAC system and your indoor air comfort requirements, there may be a number of helpful solutions for you to save money. Thermostat adjustments, better insulation, sealing gaps around windows and doors, or even opening and closing curtains all can affect the amount of energy used by your system. Your technician can point out the most cost-effective options for your home.

How can I improve my indoor air quality?

Many HVAC companies offer indoor air quality solutions, such as air purifiers or humidity controls. If you and your family suffer from allergies or asthma, air quality is an important issue to address. At the very least, you’ll want to get a recommendation on air filters that best capture allergens.

If you do consider an indoor air quality add-on for your system, MTB offers a variety of options, including whole home air filtration units, whole home humidifiers, dehumidifiers and more.

How often should I schedule maintenance checks?

Typically, you should schedule two maintenance appointments per year, one in the spring and one in the fall.

MTB offers a Priority Comfort Agreement (PCA) plan for customers, ensuring peace of mind all year long. Just like a new car, your heating and cooling equipment needs regular cleaning and maintenance to keep it running at factory specifications and to prolong its life span. As a PCA customer, you’ll receive many benefits, including one heating and one cooling visit per year, priority service and 50% off diagnostic fees.

Don’t forget to learn as much as you can from your HVAC tech.
