Fall allergies are the enemy. Make your HVAC system your ally.

If you experience allergic reactions in the fall, you’re not alone. Nearly 50 million people, or one in five Americans, suffer from allergies, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, &  Immunology . This makes allergies the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S.

It also adds up to a lot of miserable people each spring and fall, during peak allergy seasons. MTB Mechanical is here to help improve indoor air conditions, making day-to-day life more comfortable. Common allergens include pollen, pet dander, mold and dust. In the fall, the most offensive pollen sources are ragweed and goldenrod. While there’s not much you can do to avoid allergens outdoors, inside you can take control by optimizing your heating and cooling system, and choosing products that help you breathe easier.

Regular preventative maintenance is key. Your expert MTB technician is here to provide two visits a year through our Priority Comfort Agreement . Testing your equipment and inspecting your units for dust, debris and obstructions, we ensure your system is well prepared for any season.

Choose the right air filters – and change them often. One of the filter’s primary jobs is to trap dust and other fine particulates as they circulate in and out of your system. When a filter is dirty or clogged, there’s no more room to trap these allergens. This leaves more particles floating around in your home, which can exacerbate symptoms of allergies and asthma. The recommended frequency for changing is once a month for standard one-inch filters, every three months for one-inch pleated filters, and once every six months to a year for five-inch media filters. If you need a little assistance remembering when to switch, please sign up for our free filter reminders .

Dust a little harder. To prevent allergens, don’t just dust your home as usual. Dust your registers and return vents, since they circulate the air throughout your home from the HVAC system. Take a tour of your home to find all registers and vents. Clean them all with a damp or treated rag, so that your cleaning doesn’t kick up dust mites that can trigger your allergies.

Consider a UV light air purification system. Protecting your home against allergens and other unwanted airborne visitors is more important than ever in the pandemic age. UV light technology is on the leading edge of ensuring higher levels of air quality . Unlike other air purification systems designed to remove particulate matter, a UV light actually kills mold spores, germs and other air invaders. By working 24/7 to sterilize, UV germicidal lights eliminate 99.9% of the contaminants in your home.

MTB recommends the HALO-LED™ Air Purifier , which is installed directly into your system for silent, worry-free operation. And it’s so efficient, it only costs pennies a day.
