MTB Employee Spotlight: Meet Cheng Vang

Charlotte, N.C., may be known for its year-round beautiful weather, but Cheng Vang, service technician at MTB Mechanical, has something to compare it to. Enlisting in the Marine Corps in 2012, he was stationed in Hawaii for almost four years, with a six-month deployment to Australia. North Carolina native Cheng has been back home since 2016 and part of the MTB family for the past 17 months.

Cheng enjoys the daily challenges he encounters as an HVAC service technician at MTB.

“Sometimes it’s easy to determine what’s wrong when I go out on a call, and sometimes it’s more complicated, where you really have to be able to diagnose the problem,” he says. “It’s almost like learning something new every day.”

To be sure that technicians know the ins and outs of every HVAC system, MTB provides extensive training for them to be armed with the necessary knowledge.

“They are more technical than other HVAC companies, and expect us to know more about how the different systems work,” Cheng remarks. “Managers are always teaching us, either meeting us out in the field or demonstrating in the classroom at MTB headquarters. All we have to do is ask and they’re happy to help us learn. Then we are able to explain the problem at hand to customers in a language that they can understand.”

Cheng is happy that he chose a career in the HVAC field, noting that it’s something that will always be needed. MTB’s family-based approach differentes it from other companies, he adds, as they are interested in and understanding about their employees’ lives outside of the office.

When he’s not out in the field, Cheng enjoys spending time with his girlfriend, trying new foods, playing video games and hiking.
