MTB Employee Spotlight – Meet Charlie Cooper

For New Construction Accounts Manager Charlie Cooper, there are many things that set MTB Mechanical apart from other HVAC companies. As the head of MTB’s Residential New Construction training, Charlie considers this to be a true differentiator, because it provides employees with the roadmap to pursue a successful career in the industry.

“Working at a company like MTB can be more than just a job, it can be a career,” Charlie says. “You’re exposed to all different departments with a full training center available on-site. Someone can come in brand new to the field, and through the training program and hands-on experience, keep moving up. Or someone may come in already working in the field and jump ahead.”

Charlie is speaking from experience, having started as a production supervisor at MTB six years ago, after moving to Charlotte from Rhode Island. He is, however, no stranger to the industry, growing up with a father who runs his own heating and air company.

“MTB has taken my career to the next level with learning the building science part of the field,” says Charlie. “Now I’m overseeing HVAC installs in luxury homes, and I’m able to train others to see them succeed and take their career to the next level. That’s the most rewarding thing to me.”

In his free time, Charlie plays on an MTB sponsored hockey team – “The Mighty Ducts.”

Rivaling the career path opportunities available at MTB, Charlie points to the family atmosphere as something that is unique and special. With two generations leading the company, family is at its core.

“You feel like you are part of their family,” Charlie says. “They listen to you and ask questions and you collaborate as a team. Your voice matters.”

MTB’s investment in its employees is evident in the commitment it makes to their interests outside of the office as well.

“They really take the time to get to know you. And they support the things that are important to you,” says Charlie.

MTB just celebrated its fourth year of the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway, an event that Charlie helps lead for the company. Raffle tickets are sold for a chance to win the dream home, raising money for St. Jude and the fight against childhood cancer. Tickets for the 2020 home in Waxhaw sold out in seven days and raised $2 million dollars. MTB, along with manufacturer Trane, donate all material and labor for the home’s HVAC system.

Charlie and MTB also volunteer to teach young people about the opportunities available to them in trades like the HVAC field, with the “Put Tools in Schools” program. Charlie appears on the popular Fox Sports Charlotte radio program “About Your House” with Ray Terry every month, helping homeowners make proper decisions when choosing a provider or completing DIY projects.

When Charlie is not thinking about heating and air conditioning, he can be found camping in the mountains or hiking with his wife, Lynn, and their three children. He also enjoys playing hockey on his team aptly named, “The Mighty Ducts,” and sponsored by, you guessed it, MTB.
