HVAC Training, Certifications and Licenses Required in North Carolina

HVAC technicians discuss a potential fix

While it’s important to get any heating or air conditioning repairs addressed quickly, you also want to assure the work is done by an expert professional, like the technicians at MTB Mechanical. Beyond repairs, when it’s time to have a new system installed, you need someone you can trust. Homeowners rely on the recommendations of their HVAC contractor when choosing the size and type of system they’ll rely on for years to come. This is a major investment, so it’s important to have the best information when making your choice.

How do you ensure your technician is not only knowledgeable, but has your best interests in mind? From commercial and residential to new systems and ongoing maintenance, North Carolina requires a variety of training, certifications and licenses for HVAC professionals. When you choose to work with a reputable company, it means that all employees are held to the highest industry standards and are abiding by the appropriate requirements and regulations.

New Systems & Changes to Existing Systems

In North Carolina, any company who contracts to install or alter HVAC systems must be licensed by the State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors and renew those licenses annually. Even if licensed in another state, contractors and technicians must be licensed by the North Carolina State Board.

Above and beyond these state requirements, cities and counties may have their own. A laundry list of local counties (Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Lincoln, Iredell, York, Lancaster, Stanley and Union Counties) require building permits and inspections for new HVAC installations. To pull these permits, a license is required.

Building permits are designed to keep you safe and set a common standard for work. Contractors who try and circumvent the system are worthy of your suspicion. This could mean they cut corners and do substandard work, aren’t licensed, or are in trouble for ongoing code violations.
