As the seasons are changing, it’s time to get your home ready to handle the cooler temperatures. To help you will the weather transition, we’ve compiled your home’s fall checklist to make it easy.1. Prevent Roofing Problems
With the summer months come strong storms, bringing wind, rain, hail, and other debris down heavy on your house’s roof. These elements could cause damage to your roof such as loss of shingles, granules or worse!
As the weather begins to cool, it’s a good idea to schedule a roofing inspection. Whether you inspect your roof yourself or hire a professional roofer, look for any cracks, missing shingles, granule loss, or flashing.
A thorough inspection will allow you to fix any problems up front, thus preventing any leaks and water damage indoors.
2. Create a Cozy
Feel Indoors One of the greatest things about the fall and winter months is being able to decorate your home and make it feel extra warm and cozy. Hang a decorative reef on the front door, lay wool throws on the couch, place candles with fall scents around the house, and bring out the quilts for the beds.
Make your living space as warm, cozy and inviting as possible to enhance family time.
3. Sweep the Chimney
Whether your home has a gas or wood burning fireplace, get it ready for the cooler months! If you have a gas fireplace, have it inspected before turning it on to ensure it will work properly. If you have a wood burning fireplace, sweep the chimney and have your flue checked for creosote.
4. Prepare for the Fall
With the fall comes the beauty of the leaves changing colors, but it also brings the mess of all the leaves falling off. Prep your yard for what’s to come by trimming down your trees and bushes.
Aim to keep the at least one foot around the exterior of your house clear and cut back any tree branches that hang over your house.
5. Stop the Freeze
One of the more important things to remember as the temperatures cool down is to turn off your faucets. If there is undrained water in your pipes, it can expand and burst. Disconnect all hoses from your faucets so water does not freeze in the hose, and let water drip from the faucets before turning them off.
6. Get to Caulking
Did you know gaps in caulking or weather stripping can account for 10 percent of your heating bill? Inspect the areas around your doors and windows to ensure there are no gaps that need replacing. If there are any gaps, fill them with weather stripping or caulking to prevent a draft of cold air from entering your home.
7. Tune Up Your Heating System or Furnace
Last, but certainly not least, make sure your heating system or furnace is ready to keep your family warm during the colder temperatures!
First and foremost, schedule an inspection to ensure your heating system or furnace will be running properly once turned on. A technician will make sure your system is running properly and that you won’t experience random breakdowns, will make sure it will not be leaking toxic carbon monoxide, and will also make sure it’s performing efficiently and not raising your energy bill.
In the process, ensure your air filters are replaced as to stop any particles from entering your home, which could cause fall allergens to act up.
