Need Help Preparing Your Heating System?

Winter is coming! Winter is coming! Whether you’re ready or not, colder temperatures are on the horizon. December has hit and all of us in the Carolinas are bracing ourselves for the unknown weather ahead of us.Perhaps we’ll enjoy sunny, 60 degree weather for the weeks still to come (unlikely), or maybe we’ll have a surprise ice storm (flashback to the early 2000s anyone?). Regardless of what is coming, winter is coming and it’s time for us all to prepare.
Read on to learn how to prepare your home for the Carolinas’ coldest time of the year!
1. Schedule a Carbon Monoxide Check
Whether or not you’ve already turned on your heater for the year, it’s imperative to have your system inspected for carbon monoxide leaks. Carbon monoxide, or CO, is a colorless, odorless gas that can go unnoticed.
It can cause headaches, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath. If carbon monoxide poisoning ensues, it can result in more severe symptoms such as loss of muscular coordination, mental confusion, vomiting, loss of consciousness, and even death.
By scheduling a CO check through MTB Mechanical, you can ensure your home is free of carbon monoxide and that your family will be safe throughout the winter season.

2. Change Your Air Filters
Your home’s air filters should be changed every couple of months. The purpose of air filters is to trap any dirt, dust and particles trying to enter your home through your heating system.
If your air filters are not changed regularly, your indoor air quality is suffering. Not only that, but since dust and dirt particles get clogged on the filter, your system has to work that much harder to get the air through the filter. And since they should be changed every couple of months anyways, it’s good practice to get into changing them as the seasons change.
3. Ensure Your Heating System is Working Properly
You don’t want to wait for the temperature to drop to realize you’re in need of heating repairs or a replacement. Odds are that if the weather is cold and you’re just finding out that you’re system isn’t working properly, there are probably plenty of your neighbors experiencing the same realization.
Beat the rush of heating system repairs and have your system inspected to ensure it’s working properly before the temperature gets really low. By staying ahead of the game, you’ll keep your home warm all winter long!
