The thermostat is an extremely powerful object. This small unit on your wall controls the heating and cooling system that keeps your house at a comfortable temperature year round. Sometimes when there appears to be a problem with your heating and cooling system, it can actually be a problem with your thermostat. Many home owners overlook the thermostat and immediately assume that there is a problem with their system as a whole. When you have a problem with your heater or AC, be sure to call in a professional to check for thermostat issues. Typically, thermostat issues are much quicker to repair, and by checking to see if your thermostat is the casuse of your problems, you will be saving yourself time and the annoyance of messing with unrelated componants.
PROBLEMS THAT ARE CAUSED BY FAULTY THERMOSTATS:
The air conditioning/heat will not start- When the heat or air conditioning does not turn on, many of us jump to the worst conclusion: My whole system is broken, but this may not be the case! Many times, the problem is that the thermostat is not operating properly. This could mean that there is a miscalibration in the unit not allowing it to read the temperature correctly and therefore will make it so the heat/air will not turn on. Also, it could be as simple as a wiring problem in the thermostat causing the connection to the system to be lost.
The air conditioning/heat will not turn off- This is basically the same problem as before in reverse. It could be a miscalibration in the thermostat sending the wrong information to the HVAC system to keep running and not turn off, or it could also be as simple as the wire to stop the heat/air could be broken.
Uneven temperature- When your thermostat develops kinks, you may experience spots of “hot” or “cold” where it is not the same temperature as the rest of the house. If the thermostat frequently is turning the system on and off at incorrect times, then the rooms farthest from the thermostat may not reach the desired temperature.
