Is a Heat Pump Right for Me?

Heat pumps combine a heating and air conditioning system in one unit. Heat pumps are a great choice in areas where access to natural gas is not available or in locations where the winter temperatures do not get extremely cold. According to the Department of Energy, installing a heat pump can save you up to 40% in monthly costs depending on your old heating system.Heat pumps remain a mystery to some people; so let’s take a closer look at how they work. Heat pumps don’t strictly create heat; they move heat around. This requires much less energy than an electric or gas furnace would. The refrigerant within a heat pump transfers heat from the inside to the outside or visa versa; instead of creating heat by actually burning a fuel. Where there is some electricity used in this process, it is not nearly as much as is required with an electric heater.
In areas where the temperature rarely drops to very low, a heat pump is effective. When tempertaures begin to fall below 40 degrees however, a heat pumps efficiency lessens. There is always the option of augmenting a heat pump with electric heat or a gas furnace in the event of very cold weather.
For those who are not living in extremely cold locations, the heat pump remains a good and cost effective option. If you have any questions regarding any heating or air need, give MTB Heating and Air a call.
