Do You Hear Strange Noises Coming From You HVAC?

Customers call into HVAC companies sometimes with complaints of strange noises coming from their duct work or system. Below is a list of the most common heating noises and what they mean.* Rattling- If your gas-fired furnace starts to make a rattling sound, it may indicate a heat exchanger crack. This can be very dangerous. The crack may be leaking carbon monoxide into your home. On a properly functioning furnace, your heat exchanger exhausts the harmful combustion gases that result from burning fuel.
*Squealing- This is another common noise with forced air systems like furnaces or heat pumps. This is normally caused by the fan belt or the fan bearings. This can be fixed by either lubricating or changing the fan belt.
*Rumbling- This is normally caused as hot air begins to fill the ducts in your home. The ducts expand at the new hot air and then slowly cool and contract. This can also be caused by a dirty burner or by leftover fuel in the combustion chamber.
* Turning on and off- if you hear your heating system turning on and off a lot, this is calledshort cycling. It normally means that your furnace or heat pump is the wrong size for your home. What it is doing is quickly heating your home and then shutting off. When your home cools again the process of heating and shutting off is repeated.
